Title: WACsmash 2025: The Third

Description: WACsmash is a showcase and gallery of dance, film, visual art, music, spoken word, photography, and other artistic work created and produced by undergraduate students in the World Arts and Cultures/Dance Department. Our production’s theme this year is The Third.

THE THIRD - fixating on the idea of community and the other, The Third is inspired by the social concept of the Third Place, coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg.

We explore how our works can be connected to a specific, personal space defined by the ways in which it instils a sense of belonging within its visitors. Looking beyond the primary and secondary social environments of the home and workplace, the Third Place separates itself through providing a unique and alternative feeling of safety and acceptance. Examples include churches, parks, libraries, cafes, gyms, theaters, family gatherings, etc.

Moreover, our theme is not limited to location, as we challenge our creators to question how the alternative plays a part in their lives and communities—how much is a physical location connected to their sense of community and belonging? Since “The Third” is centered around inclusion, we also encourage the idea of collaborating with other creators and other WACSmash participants!
