Famous Asian Socialite

Paints On Bag

Artist: Bernice Wang

Call To Action

There are rich people doing art, poor people doing art, and people like me in the socioeconomic middle also doing art. Regardless of artistic privilege, our training, materials, and venues cost money. Those with less opportunities and resources struggle to prosper while those with privilege have a leg up, as money makes more money. So, pay your artists, credit their work, and consider the accessibility of and the privilege behind the art you consume. You can commission work directly from artists, donate if you can to nonprofits, attend small galleries, and share the artwork (with credit!) with your circles. Lastly, advocate for arts education reform; why, especially when schools are financially pressured, should the arts suffer first?

Bio.

“As someone who is not a famous Asian socialite, dedicating my life to art is fraught with financial considerations. I remember reading about Heart Evangelista who paints on her dozens of Hermes bags, that then resell for thousands. Thus, Famous Asian Socialite Paints On Bag expresses the socioeconomic disparity in the art industry, performing or visual.”

Bernice Wang is a mixed-media artist originally trained in traditional art and manga/graphic styles but has branched out to explore more interdisciplinary work. She enjoys the freedom of combining different mediums in unpredictable ways, such as painting with melted wax or sculpting foam with caulk. Additionally, Bernice draws influence from her experience in architectural and industrial design, and more recently, in the fundamentals of CAD and digital art.
