<image:caption>CREATORS: Aminata Diop aka puma*, Madison Tanguay, Ava Brock & Promise Ogunleye "Alt/ers" is dance and music about the spaces of solitude and ritual that allow us to come into our identities and connect with our bodies. <image:caption>CREATOR: Avielle Conn Sherman "H(ours)" is a montage of digital clips as well as different types of dance movement. It explores the crossing of intersectional feminism and environmental justice, and the different stages this carries: from defeated and angry to hopeful and empowered. <image:caption>creator: Bernice Wang As someone who is not a famous Asian socialite, dedicating my life to art is fraught with financial considerations. I remember reading about Heart Evangelista who paints on her dozens of Hermes bags, that then resell for thousands. Thus, "Famous Asian Socialite Paints On Bag" expresses the socioeconomic disparity in the art industry, performing or visual. The intricacies of this experience are not often acknowledged, but in this piece I aim to empower those who feel as though they have been harmed by the eyes that surround them. <image:caption>CREATORS: Travis Lim and Leo Flores Our piece challenges the presence of authentic Hip Hop dance on a predominantly western and minority-excluding theater stage. Hip Hop as an art form was created out of the need for expression amongst the Black and Brown community. <image:caption>CREATOR: Juliette Martinez I aimed to create a work that showcases the evolution of a woman's acceptance of identity. This piece is a direct challenge to the patriarchy and the oppressive male gaze. Typically, by showcasing styles that have a lack of women representation, we are further reclaiming our place in these art forms and creating an opportunity to reclaim our identities through the exploration of gender expression through movement. <image:caption>There are rich people doing art, poor people doing art, and people like me in the socioeconomic middle also doing art. Regardless of artistic privilege, our training, materials, and venues cost money. Those with less opportunities and resources struggle to prosper while those with privilege have a leg up, as money makes more money. So, pay your artists, credit their work, and consider the accessibility of and the privilege behind the art you consume. You can commission work directly from artists, donate if you can to nonprofits, attend small galleries, and share the artwork (with credit!) with your circles. Lastly, advocate for arts education reform; why, especially when schools are financially pressured, should the arts suffer first?</image:caption>

Thus, Famous Asian Socialite Paints On Bag expresses the socioeconomic disparity in the art industry, performing or visual.” Bernice Wang is a mixed-media artist originally trained in traditional art and manga/graphic styles but has branched out to explore more interdisciplinary work. She enjoys the freedom of combining different mediums in unpredictable ways, such as painting with melted wax or sculpting foam with caulk. Additionally, Bernice draws influence from her experience in architectural and industrial design, and more recently, in the fundamentals of CAD and digital art. <image:caption>I am a 4th year at UCLA double majoring in Dance and Public Affairs and minoring in African American Studies. "The Gap Between" focuses on the concept of intersectionality, how social categorizations overlap to create additional levels of disempowerment. Specifically, women of color often fall in the gap between race issues and women's issues.</image:caption>

Continue to uplift the women and female-identifying members of your community by supporting their endeavors and investing in their growth. <image:title>Am I Woman Enough? - Bio.</image:title>
<image:caption>For my 4th and final WACsmash show, I aimed to create a work that showcases the evolution of a woman's acceptance of identity. Fostering an inclusive space for my cast to celebrate their individuality and diversity was of utmost priority. As a Dance and Gender Studies double major, this piece is a direct challenge to the patriarchy and the oppressive male gaze. Typically, by showcasing styles that have a lack of women representation, we are further reclaiming our place in these art forms and creating an opportunity to reclaim our identities through the exploration of gender expression through movement.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Find local gardens or Environmental/Climate Justice organizations near you and volunteer (especially women-led ones)! Another thing we can do is of course use less single-use plastics, and order less from big companies, but while the individual actions are important, the most impactful way we can make change is as a community. If you are unable to do those action items, donate to environmental justice organizations, specifically those listed below(!), or reach out to local or state legislators/sign petitions to divest in fossil fuels, or lean more into climate friendly lawmaking. <image:title>Toledo - Bio.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a Brazilian American artist, raised in Los Angeles CA, Toledo is invested in the stories of the communities surrounding her. City life can be such a drain on our emotional and mental everyday life while also simultaneously filling us constantly with the joy of art and community. This piece attempts to explore the many faces of mental health and the ways that we can continue to support one another through the constantly evolving world of the inner city. This pandemic has brought with it so many social justice movements that have continued to evoke all sorts of experiences on the spectrum of mental health, and this piece is a bit of Toledo’s and the dancer’s experiences.</image:caption>

      <image:title>METAMORPHOSIS: Program - REMINISCENCE</image:title>
<image:caption>CREATOR: Avielle Conn Sherman I wanted to create a piece exploring home, and challenge the way the word is understood and thought about. What does home mean, beyond being just a physical place? How can it transform as we change, and how do we find old remnants and new versions of it in new people, places, and ourselves? I aimed to focus with my cast on the feeling of change, nostalgia, personal and communal growth, and what it means to find new rhythms and ideas of what ‘home’ really is through movement. This piece encapsulates different stages, starting with the “escape” and ending with the “return” to what we have known as home- finding beauty, family, and warmth in whatever we have known or built for ourselves. I personally feel such a duty to create a piece dedicated to finding this type of love and joy, as we are performing in Kaufman, a place that has become such a special version of home to me. I hope this piece can bring you a bit of that joy too.</image:caption>

      <image:title>METAMORPHOSIS: Program - COUNTER</image:title>
<image:caption>CREATOR: Bailey Davies-Mahaffey & Rachael Odebunmi This piece explores the emergence of countercultures in the 60s and 70s. A decade of suppression born from the need for postwar normalcy resulted in the most revolutionary period of the 20th century. How do we understand this historical time of resistance and change and how does it impact our perspectives today? The makeup of our mainstream culture is constantly volatile. What is ordinary when ordinary is always changing? How do we conform to something becoming increasingly impossible to define?</image:caption>

      <image:title>METAMORPHOSIS: Program - THE RHYTHM PROJECT</image:title>
<image:caption>CREATOR: Lilah Horton In Tap culture, we study our mentors and the pioneers before them, bury ourselves in historic footage, and train ourselves to feel music more than we can hear it. With modern academic standards, Tap has slowly been separated from these practices. My desire with this piece is to present the beginnings of Tap’s growth in interdisciplinary collaboration as my vision for experimental evolution. Keeping the authenticity and essence of Tap, Hip Hop, and Modern while marrying their similarities has provided a rich collaboration that my cast-mates and I have experienced together. I hope to share this experience with more people and bring attention to the undying life within Tap’s growth.</image:caption>

Transformation can come in many forms: good, evil, or anything in between and as us Iranians globally have seen our homeland descend into dystopia for over 40 years, what we look to now is a new beginning of our country. Through the street dance community and culture itself, we learn to deconstruct and break down these elements. We learn that we make the environment that we grow in. <image:title>METAMORPHOSIS: Program - THAT I CAN’T QUITE PART</image:title>
<image:caption>CREATOR: Emma-Rose Allen This work looks at three areas of change in Borderline Personality Disorder. Extreme swings in emotion, unstable sense of self, and instability in relationships all encapsulate the sense that people with BPD can be one person one moment, and a completely different person the next. This piece aims to advocate for dancers struggling with mental health because it takes such an enormous toll on the way we take class, perform, and even interact with our community. I hope that sharing this experience can create a necessary conversation about the struggle, to seek meaningful connection, and to argue that people living with BPD can experience joyous and special lives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>METAMORPHOSIS: Program - OUROBOROS</image:title>
<image:caption>CREATOR: Travis Lim As young artists try to navigate their individual journeys, they are met with forces of change that either corrupt or empower them. This piece will explore these factors that influence dancers to move, look, or act a certain way, and how this cycle of control is passed on. When everyone is telling us where to go, which way to move, and what to do, how do we find our own path? Within all of these influences, how does a dancer stay true to their morals, their journey, and themselves? Can we truly resist temptation as it disguises itself as gratification, or do we all inevitably become a product of others' voices?</image:caption>

Being duo partners in a MFA show last year allowed them to develop a partnership in dancing and choreographing together. With a mutual admiration for the way one another moves, they have discovered a very collaborative creation process that they are excited to continue exploring. Their piece will focus on countercultures in post war America. We are so excited to be creators this year and bring countercultures into the dance/performance space!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Starting his journey in 2007, Travis Lim started his training in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada. Travis began his journey as a competitive dancer and over the years won many international competitions. His travels around the world would expose him to the various street styles at a young age and instill in him a passion for Hip Hop. Travis continued his training in street styles and through this lens became a choreographer for competitive and performance teams in Canada. Since then, Travis’ training in Hip Hop freestyle and choreography has allowed him to blend both styles into his work as he continues to hone in on his unique choreographic approach. As a student and practitioner of Hip Hop, Travis is continuing his journey as an educator to share the knowledge of his mentors with the next generation of dancers. Now attending UCLA, Travis hopes to use Hip Hop as an outlet for creativity and change, as he continues his journey as a choreographer.</image:caption>

MAY May (she/her) is a senior Dance and Psychology double major. She was born in Los Angeles a couple decades ago and has been here ever since. Her first formal introduction to dance was in 6th grade, when she began her education at a local performing arts charter. It was there that May first came into contact with the idea that movement could be an alternative channel through which to communicate with and understand the world around her. Since then, she has leaned into the post-modern and Gaga influences from her schooling, with an intent to create work that not only disrupts and reframes dance performance, but also honors the joy of movement exploration and open inquiry!</image:caption>

Eventually, this developed into a passion for producing documentative content: behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, and everything in between. Through his work, he seeks to inform and inspire other creatives by documenting the creative processes of other multidisciplinary artists. Thus, the project he will soon debut at WACsmash, features different UCLA artists across many mediums as they walk through the process of a significant project of theirs. This project, titled Art is Alive, is a culmination of his work as an artist and something he has been eager to create since he was 15. Now at 19, he is very excited to execute this vision and share these special moments on a bigger scale.</image:caption>
